Activities With Children

Arts, Crafts, and Fun Things to Do and Make with your children

Toss any magazine older Work them out. The problem with bad weather is that children don’t get enough exercise. Play “freeze dance” stopping in position when the music goes off. Pile up pillows and encourage the kids to gallop over them on hobbyhorses. Get out the tutus and do a dance show. The storm has hit and you are stuck indoors with small lightening fast children. Kids are bouncing off the walls. You’re just about to go bananas. You take a look, but the pieces to Candyland are missing. Maybe a boardgame can save you?

Grab some couch cushions or an large box and drape a sheet over them. Put toys and kitchenware for the kids to play with underneath. They can make a walkway to the structure with blocks. Set it up and hand out the invitations to all of the stuffed friends. It could be your dog or cats birthday, or your child’s favorite stuffed animals birthday. Decorate white paper plates for party invitations by coloring them and personalizing them. Bake up some cookies or have a popcornfest. Stretch out the preparation. Throw a ten minute party. Fill plastic bottles with whatever is on the shelf to make potions. Toothpaste, ketchup, food coloring - the yuckier the better. Add baking soda and vinegar and watch your concoction fizz. Clean out the magazine rack and have your kids clip pictures and paste them on paper. Suggest a theme, such as animals. Toss any magazine older than your toddler. Work them out. So We’ve redone the bloggie! Zach designed some cutie headers, which I had never had till now. I changed the font size & color up a bit. I even went through some of my first flickr posts to find our old school illustration of Camp Hobocamp. I love this little drawing Zach did.

So due to stomach issue I missed PR Wednesday night, luckily they replay that bad boy like ten times. So I am catching the 1:30am airing. All I can say is Melissa doesn’t care too much for Suede.

Well more tomorrow- hope you like the new look.

Riot = Not Quiet

Riot = Not Quiet, originally uploaded by hobocampcrafts.

I bought this patch like a million years ago from Sticker Sisters way back in high school. I was really happy to see that they are still around and just as cool as I remembered. I hope I can get pencils that say “Girls Can Do Anything” for my little girl. I still have mine, they’re sparkly & silver with hot pink font. Very cool. very special. Now the patch adorns a onesie I hope our baby girl can wear.

My parents came over for a little visit. We gave them all our milk products, since we’ve both been having issues. They brought us some delicious dinner rolls we’ll enjoy with our carrots, mashed potatoes & chik’n dinner tonight. Along with a big ol’ bag of baking soda- to clean with.
I’ve changed my Prenatal pill and I think it may have helped and may have even been my stomach culprit.

I finished 3 cute pin cushions yesterday and appliqued some recycled little girl clothes for the baby. Just freshing or refreshing them up w/ a dab of Melissa/Hobocamp.

Mom also brought along brown sugar, so I can make Zach’s Mother’s Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe. Tonight is Project Runway night, so we’ll yum up our dinner and get nestled on the couch to veg. This is where I get my knit-time in.

Well have a great time whatever you’re doing! xo

Real Life Travel Tales: Putting the Brakes on Summer Escapes

Filed under: Educational — admin @ 4:01 am

We’ve all been there before: We’re running late for work, school or a doctor’s appointment and we try to make up for lost time by putting the pedal to the metal. Typically, that excuse doesn’t fly when pleading your case to the police officer that just clocked you exceeding the speed limit.

There are kids in our park! Surviving the summer as a homeschooler.

Why do home schoolers need a guide to surviving the hot summer months, I hear you ask, your children are always at home why is the hot summer months any different?
Well simply because other children are around. Most homeschoolers I know have a sense of dread at this time of year, knowing for the next 6 weeks any semblance of our normal routine is impossible.

Homeschoolers hot summer months moans:
The parks and playgrounds where we spend our afternoons lazing around are full of children. There is no sitting down and watching the toddler from a distance anymore. We need to follow him around in order to see him and make sure he takes turns.
The libraries where we idle away our rainy days curled up on beanbags reading, are full of such ear-splitting din that it is difficult to think never mind read.
Museums, which we happily potter around for hours on end, are suddenly so full it is impossible to see anything.
Friends who haven’t even phoned all school term suddenly seem to have moved in and everywhere you go in your house you trip over children.
Also if you adopt a formal approach to home schooling it is difficult to persuade you children that they should be working when they can hear children playing outside.

How to cope: major tip is to try to view the mass of children as an ‘educational resource’ rather than an encumbrance.

Parks and playgrounds: Could you change your favourite one for one slightly quieter? Where I live we have two local parks, one is on the sea front and people drive over from several miles around to visit it, so it is always packed. The other is a local one in a housing estate, used by local children; this becomes our regular haunt in hot summer months.
If your children don’t know many local children (home schoolers friends are often spread over a relatively large area) hanging out in the local park over the hot summer months is an excellent way to let them make local friends.

Libraries and museums: They often lay on special events and fun stuff to do for children over the hot summer months, these are well worth finding out and getting involved in. As well as entertaining the children at the time they also provide an excellent opportunity to meet and chat to people such as the local Children’s librarian and museum curators and educational co-ordinators. Mention you are home schooling and they are often keen to help by running sessions at the libraries and museums for home schooling groups.

Friends: Make the most of opportunities to catch up with schooled friends. You are pleased to see them really and your children certainly will be.
Take advantage of the extra children cluttering up your house to do fun stuff to do that are difficult with only one or two children; help the children put on plays, play cricket or baseball, have a mini Olympics etc.

‘School work’: Does it matter if you let things slide a bit really? Perhaps you could change the time you sit down to work so everyone is finished early. We are often sitting at the table at 7am.

And of course, don’t forget to plan your back to school picnic. The day the schools go back gather your home schooling friends, a yummy picnic and take yourselves down to the beach, park or other favourite hang out, kick back and enjoy the peace.

Tuesday’s Organizing Brigade

Ok, so there isn’t exactly a brigade- unless you count me and the baby in my tummy.. cause the cats aren’t much help. For the most part the apt. is settled, but we have pockets of unorganized mess. So today at least for an hour, I am going to try and whip those pockets into shape. Our bookshelf (Expedit) is up and in full effect! Dividing my little space, housing our Harry Potters and other cuteness.

Yesterday I took some shots of two of my latest coffee cuffs- which will be in my shop today.
The first one was made from a heavy duty canvas/furniture fabric with various ribbons stitched on. The second is made from a vintage white fabric with raised soft-velvety green polka dots. I then put some fun carrot fabric over it with a handmade gingham in yellow fabric button.
Too cute! They’ll be here Cuteness and Then Some!.

On another note, I’m going to meet with a Maternity Consultant at the local hospital. I’m not very happy with the way my OBGYN experience is actually going.
After watching The Business of Being Born- I realized that I didn’t have to be uncomfortable, which has been the way I am feeling. It took watching this movie and a family friend casually asking me if I had a midwife- before I realized there were other options. I went to school for Women’s Studies and to be honest at the time they didn’t really get into too much about hospital birth Vs. midwifery. Right now I see a slew of different Docs who are partners. I never really see the same one twice and feel no connection to them, nor do I even know who would deliver my babe. So, tomorrow I’ll research other options. I’ll be sure to share them! But check out the movie- it was pretty amazing!

Well one of my favorite events is this week… not so much of an event as it is a civil duty.. you know- the new season of Project Runway! I’m pretty excited! I’ve also gotten addicted to Flippin Out- which is funny to admit. But while Z is on his weekly conference call- I look to Bravo to keep me company.

Hope you’re all well

Summer Plans

For most families with preschoolers attending preschool, hot summer months gives you a time to have your children back at home. Since I am a teacher, I have found that the time at home has been an adjustment for all of us. They have a break in the routine, having to entertain themselves, and I am having to break away from the business of the home and try to make some time to entertain. The most important thing is limiting TV time and giving them some great family time. Our little boy will be in kindergarten in the fall, and our little girl will be in preschool again. Our first year with the children in school was successful for all involved, but now we have to adjust to all being home together and getting along! Share with me your hot summer months plans and tell me what you are going to do with your preschooler. There are so many adventures to be had!
