We’ve added 4 fun coloring pages for Grandparent’s Day. Perhaps the children could color them in and send them to Grandma and Grandpa, to let them know they are special! Grandparent’s Day will be celebrated on 13th September 2009 in the US and on 4th October 2009 in the UK.

We’ve added 7 new Back to School coloring pages today – just simple “objects” (we’ve got more detailed coloring pages coming early next week) but they are great for getting nervous used to the idea of starting a new school year. They can also be used as posters for the classroom.

Kids Fun Zone and Outdoor Play Area at Janss Marketplace

The children Fun Zone craft events meets the last Saturday of every month from noon to 3 p.m. at the Janss Marketplace. children Fun Zone membership includes lifetime membership cards, free seasonal crafts, merchant discounts and birthday gifts. Remaining 2009 dates as follows:

In addition to the monthly children Fun Zone, Janss Marketplace has a small outdoor play area geared towards younger children in front of the Old Navy store as well as an interactive water fountain area that is particularly fun for the children in the warmer months of the year.

Skating Plus – Ventura

Skating Plus is an indoor skating rink that has been around since 1984, offering public roller skating, food, lessons, clinics, birthday parties, etc. Check their website for discount coupons. Skating Plus is off the 101 Freeway near Victoria in Ventura, in close proximity to Golf N’ Stuff and Buena Lanes (sits to the left of Buena Lanes).

LazerStar in Camarillo

Check out the only laser tag facility that I’m aware of near the Conejo Valley. The laser tag arena is 4,500 square feet. For ages 6 and up. No reservations or required to play but for groups of 8 or more they are recommended. LazerStar is open every day of the year except Easter, Christmas and Thanksgiving. This is a popular birthday joint; check out the website for detailed information. There is also an arcade and food available.

On a personal note, we have been to several children’ birthday parties at LazerStar, including a party with 5 and 6 year olds. Laser tag, which I also participated in, was a LOT of fun! The equipment was a bit on the heavy side for some of the little guys but everyone enjoyed it.

Gull Wings Children’s Museum – Oxnard

Fun, hands on, interactive and education museum for children ages 2 through 12. Gull Wings opened in 1988 and currently has 15 exhibits, including space shuttle, rain forest, ocean touch tank, harbor exhibit and others. Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is only $4; children under 2 are free. Annual family memberships also available.

Discovery Center Teens – Service Club (Grades 8 to 12)

Discovery Center Teens is a club that meets monthly to explore science/technology career options. In addition, DC Teens help to staff programs for younger children and the broader community that explore science and technology in fun and interesting ways.

DC Teens learn leadership skills through organizational work and event planning, and earn community service credit for volunteer hours.

The DC Teens are part of The Discovery Center for Science and Technology, an educational non-profit organization with a mission to make science and related subjects understandable and fun. The goal of the Discovery Center is to build a hands-on science museum in the Thousand Oaks community for people of all ages.

Dads Have Feelings Too

Paul had a bit of a crisis this week. It seems that fathers can also suffer from post-natal depression – this is more common than you might think.

I can’t say I hadn’t noticed that he hadn’t been himself lately. Before we had Jess I would have been on it like a shot, and we’d have talked, I guess, and maybe nipped any really negative feelings in the bud. But with my attention diverted to the helpless little mite who does nothing but feed and poo and sleep, Paul was left to sink or swim on his own. And, in this case, he sank.

Our doctor, thankfully, is very progressive and understanding. He didn’t actually go to the doctors because he was feeling low, he went for something else entirely. But she remembered me (a bad sign – did she think he had good reason to be depressed with a wife like me?), and asked how everything was. Cue good opportunity for Paul to open up and tell someone, at long last, how it has been for him.
